Amazon Signs Four Onshore Wind PPAs in Greece

Amazon has signed several PPAs within the wind energy industry.

Amazon has signed four Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) in Greece across three utility-scale wind projects.

Two PPAs are tied to the 44.4MW Vermio wind farm, which is divided into Vermio North and South and spans the Western and Central Macedonia regions. The project is currently under construction and is planned to be completed in 2025.

The other two PPAs are linked to the 35.4MW Mesokorfi and 29.5MW Koukouras wind farms, which are both ready-to-build and expected to reach commercial operations in 2026.

All four projects are being developed by Irish renewable energy firm Aersoleir.

The energy produced by the projects will be delivered to the Greek grid, supporting the overall decarbonisation of the country’s energy infrastructure.

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at AWS, said, “These three new wind farms in Greece mark an important milestone in our carbon-free energy journey across Europe and add to the growing number of renewable energy projects we’ve supported in the country.”

Amazon has signed several PPAs within the wind energy industry. In March, the company signed a PPA with Iberdrola to offtake 159MW from the East Anglia Three offshore wind farm.

Before this, in February, it signed a further PPA with Iberdrola to offtake from the 98.4MW Juniper IIA wind farm in Oregon.

In addition, in March 2023, it inked a PPA to offtake energy from two of Iberdrola’s offshore windfarms in Germany, Baltic Eagle and Windanker, which will provide Amazon with 1.1TWh annually.

Amazon is the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy. Some studies, however, have questioned the value of PPAs that aren’t matched 24/7 with output.
