The Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) announced its Open Review Initiative project, designed to build a unified open source toolset for playback, review and approval.
We are proud to confirm our participation in this project as the main partner, alongside Autodesk and Sony Pictures Imageworks.
In 2021, ASWF formed a working group to investigate the state of playback and review systems and to explore the opportunity to create a common set of media tools to drive the creative review process throughout production. This working group went on to form the Open Review Initiative project, which is currently in the sandbox stage.
The project is being led by a Technical Steering Committee (TSC), which comprises members from DNEG, Autodesk and Sony Pictures Imageworks, plus a diverse cross-section of the community of engineers and users invested in the space. The TSC will initially focus on guiding the strategy for each studio’s standalone review and playback applications (xSTUDIO for DNEG, RV for Autodesk, and parts of the itView ecosystem for Sony Pictures Imageworks) as they become available to the open source community, with the goal of their gradual convergence into a cohesive, state-of-the-art review and approval framework.
Speaking about the project, David Morin, Executive Director at Academy Software Foundation, said, “[The Open Review Initiative] shows the commitment of our community and member companies to develop software together when it makes sense, to avoid duplication of efforts and for the benefit of our industry at large. I want to acknowledge the leadership of our member companies Autodesk, DNEG, and Sony Pictures Imageworks, who are contributing code to seed the Open Review Initiative.”
