Alibaba Cloud Completes 500 Petabyte Data Migration

Alibaba said in a statement posted to WeChat that the amount of data Xiaohongshu generates daily is “beyond one’s imagination.”

Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu has migrated 500 petabytes of data to Alibaba Cloud. Xiaohongshu’s migration of the data lake took a year to complete, with 1,500 staff from the social media platform with Alibaba on the project.

As reported by the South China Morning Post, the companies claim this one one of the largest data migration projects “ever.” The data lake included all the raw and critical data the social platform had accumulated since its launch 11 years ago.

Xiaohongshu, based in Shanghai, is the largest lifestyle social media platform in China and has more than 300 million active users. Alibaba said in a statement posted to WeChat that the amount of data Xiaohongshu generates daily is “beyond one’s imagination.”

The cloud provider put the success of the cloud migration down to close collaboration, fast response times from teams, and agreed-upon development standards.

Alibaba is the largest cloud provider in China. One of the company’s data centres suffered a fire in September of this year, leading to Alibaba having to carefully dry its hardware and machinery.

March saw Alibaba slash its cloud prices by as much as 55% across China in an effort to win back customers from rivals such as Tencent, JD.com, and Baidu.
