The company adds the ninth ground station to its data centre network
Amazon Web Services has expanded its AWS Ground Station platform to its Asia Pacific region, in Seoul, South Korea.
Launched in 2019, this is the ninth ground station AWS has installed at or near its data centres. The company has three in the US in Oregon, Ohio, and Hawaii; two in Europe in Ireland and Stockholm; and individual locations in Bahrain, South Africa (Cape Town), and Australia (Sydney).

AWS says adding another ground station in APAC enables satellite owners and operators to connect with their satellites and process their space workloads more frequently.
‘An additional mid-latitude AWS Ground Station Region reduces the time between contacts for Low-Earth Orbit satellites and offers increased utility for customers whose operations require downlink in this range’, the company said in a statement.
The company says it plans to add more ground station locations in the feature but didn’t provide a detailed roadmap.
Microsoft recently revealed its first colocated satellite ground station at its Quincy data centre in Washington, and SES said it had plans to place three more at Microsoft facilities.
