Iron Mountain Partners with SeaQurrent

Iron Mountain has recently signed several renewable supply agreements to bolster its clean energy credentials.

Iron Mountain Data Centers (IMDC) has partnered with SeaQurrent to deploy its tidal energy solution to power its data centre operations.

SeaQurrent develops a tidal kite solution that provides consistent baseload power. The solution moves in a predetermined and stable figure-eight path, controlled by an autonomous, remote monitoring and control system that oversees the entire process.

The pulling force generated by the kite sets a biodegradable working fluid in motion, which is then converted into a rotating motion that drives a generator to produce electricity.

A single system’s capacity is 500kW, and they are deployed in farms with capacities ranging from a few megawatts to hundreds of megawatts.

“The partnership with IMDC complements our local first approach. We experience strong local support and ensure local energy needs are also met. Partnerships with industry leaders like Iron Mountain also allow us to deploy projects at the right scale,” said Maurits Alberda, COO at SeaQurrent.

Iron Mountain sees the solution as part of its broader push to power its operations 24/7 on clean energy by 2040. Due to its output predictability, tidal energy suits data centres power requirements, which require consistent, uninterrupted power. This could potentially bridge the gap between intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar.

Iron Mountain has recently signed several renewable supply agreements to bolster its clean energy credentials.

In June, it signed a solar procurement deal with InRange for 5MW annually of rooftop solar capacity to offset Iron Mountain’s LON-1 facility.

Before this, in April 2023, it signed a solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in the Netherlands with local energy company Sunrock.
