India’s National Informatics Centre Services Inc. (NICSI) is building a new data centre in Assam, India.
Located in the north of Guwahati, the facility will be built with a grant from India’s Ministry of Electronics and IT, totaling more than Rs 600 crores ($71m).
The facility, India’s sixth NICSI national data centre, is projected to host 200 racks, expandable to 400. Other specifications have not been shared, but the facility is expected to be operational by March 2025.
NICSI currently operates data centres in Delhi, Pune, Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh.
Founded in 1976, the government department is responsible for the nation’s ICT needs and facilitating digital access to government services. Its NICNET network creates links between ministries in the central, state, and district governments.
Another Indian government body, TCIL, recently began work on a data centre for the Indian Coast Guard. In 2015, Narendra Modi’s government launched the Digital India program to digitally transform the nation. More recently, Modi announced India would share its digital infrastructure with the world.
CtrlS broke ground on a data centre in Guwahati in 2022 and Yotta Infrastructure also operates in the state of Assam. The state is located in the Northeast of India, bordering Bhutan. Its largest city is Guwahati and is traditionally known for its wildlife, tea plantations, and temples.
