The value of the licences granted for operating 5G mobile networks to the four mobile network operators (MNOs) is approximately $675 million.
Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has awarded 5G licences to three more telcos. Vodafone Egypt, Orange Egypt, and e& Egypt have all been awarded the licences to operate the technology, joining Telecom Egypt, which secured its licence earlier this year.
According to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT), the agreements were signed under the same terms as Telecom Egypt’s in January.
In total, the value of the licences granted for operating 5G mobile networks to the four mobile network operators (MNOs) is approximately $675 million. The term of the agreement includes the renewal of previous generations’ licences for 15 years, without allocating new frequency bands.
Amr Talaat, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Egypt, heralded the award of the licences, noting 5G’s potential to drive transformation in the country.
Talaat said 5G will support ultrafast broadband speeds, while also enhancing the Internet of Things (IoT) services. As of yet, no telco in Egypt has launched 5G. Telecom Egypt signed a deal with network vendor Nokia to deploy its 5G network.
Nokia will deploy its 5G kit in several cities, including Alexandria, Aswan, Cairo, Giza, and Luxor.
